Planning permission has been granted for designs to transform Eagle Brewery Wharf, a key space along Kingston’s riverside.
We are proud to be working in partnership with Kingston First, the town centre’s business improvement district, on the regeneration of the site, which will be a place where everyone can unwind, enjoy, and connect with nature, with added greenery maximising biodiversity.
Following several rounds of consultation, the designs have been updated to reflect feedback from the public and stakeholders. The designs for the open space include lots of seating, trees and plants across the site, a play trail, and space for pop-ups, public art installations, markets and activities including exercise classes. There will be nesting places for birds on a swift tower, which will also have artwork and historic plaques celebrating Kingston’s heritage.
This new and exciting riverside space will reopen in time for people to get outside, relax and soak up the sun in Summer 2025.
This scheme is funded through the council’s Capital programme, which is different funding to the day to day spending to deliver services and can be used to improve council assets (land, buildings, equipment). The Capital programme is enabling the council to create flexible, sustainable and safe spaces that support health and wellbeing and encourage people to enjoy the riverside and town centre.
Cllr Alison Holt, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Economic Development and Leisure said:
“We have worked closely with our communities to create an exciting scheme based on their feedback, and I am delighted that we can shortly get going with the works to transform this section of the riverside.
Thank you to our partners Kingston First, and everyone that got involved to let us know their thoughts. I am looking forward to this new space, focused on wellbeing and biodiversity, being enjoyed to its fullest next year.”
Kirsten Henly, CEO of Kingston First said:
‘Kingston First are pleased to be investing in an important space in the town centre. The designs reflect the views of different communities and I look forward to these being brought to life to create an even more vibrant riverside for businesses, locals and visitors’.
